The London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF) has long been renowned as a global hub for young minds passionate about science. This report is a reflection on my immersive experience at LIYSF, where I had the privilege to interact with like-minded peers, learn from world-class scientists, and explore the vibrant city of London. This journey not only broadened my scientific horizons but also enriched my cultural understanding..

Before setting foot in London for LIYSF, there was a whirlwind of excitement, anticipation, preparation and some anxiety. The process began with the application, where I had to showcase my passion for science and my desire to collaborate with peers from diverse backgrounds. Upon acceptance, the logistical arrangements and travel plans ensued months prior. In truth, I was supposed to make myself present in the 2022 LIYSF but due to VISA complications I was unable to go. But this year, the moment finally arrived when I found myself at the doorstep of this global scientific gathering.

One of the most remarkable aspects of LIYSF was the opportunity to interact with fellow participants from all corners of the world. On the first day I was immediately in awe. The diversity of cultures, languages, and perspectives was truly astonishing. Each day brought new friendships, and through these interactions, I gained valuable insights into how science and culture is perceived and pursued in different regions. These connections formed the foundation of collaborative projects and discussions throughout the forum.

LIYSF is renowned for its impressive lineup of scientific lectures and workshops delivered by prominent scientists and experts. These sessions covered a wide range of scientific disciplines, from physics and chemistry to biology and environmental science. One lecture that left a lasting impact on me was the presentation on Forensic Science. The lecturer’s enthusiasm and expertise ignited my curiosity about the nature of crimes and how modern technology can help solve cases that would otherwise be impossible to convict in the court of law despite the existence of eye testimonies. It inspired me to explore forensics as a potential field of study. It definitely sparked my curiosity.

A highlight of LIYSF was the opportunity to engage in collaborative projects. In one of the visits to the multiple university campuses around the UK, participants were grouped into teams, each tasked with addressing a real-world problem; building a bridge! My team focused on the issue of trusses and how to withstand as much load as possible while also weighing the least possible. Working with students from India, Brazil, and Germany, we conducted experiments and developed a comprehensive presentation that we later shared with the rest of the participants and ultimately did a good job. This hands-on experience taught me the importance of international cooperation in tackling global issues.

Beyond the scientific aspect, LIYSF encouraged participants to explore the rich cultural tapestry of London. Visits to iconic landmarks such as the Science Museum, Buckingham Palace, and the Big Ben were not only awe-inspiring but also provided historical context for our scientific discussions. The opportunity to savour diverse cuisines from around the world in London’s vibrant neighbourhoods was another highlight. Foods from restaurants from Lebanon, Spain and Japan to name a few.

My experience at LIYSF left an indelible mark on my academic and personal development. It reinforced my passion for science and broadened my horizons by exposing me to a global network of aspiring scientists, new people from all over the world and scenery like no other. The collaborative spirit, adventures, and bonds I acquired during LIYSF have been invaluable in my personal journey and the memories I’ve made are ones I will cherish eternally.

My journey at LIYSF was a memorable one, marked by intellectual growth, cultural exploration, and lasting friendships.
