The London International Youth Science Forum Alumni Community brings together former participants from around the world, across generations and scientific disciplines, united by a shared experience and an enduring connection to science. Clare Elwell Professor Clare Elwell

LIYSF Alumni (1984, UK)
Academic President of LIYSF (2018–present)

Professor Clare Elwell is Vice-Dean for Impact and Professor of Medical Physics at University College London, where she directs the NIRS Research Group. She attended LIYSF in 1984, an experience that helped shape her career in brain imaging and global health research. Her work focuses on infant brain development, functional near-infrared spectroscopy, malaria, and healthcare innovation in low-resource settings. She leads multiple international research collaborations and is President of the Society for Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy. She is also the founder of Globalfnirs and Young Scientists for Africa and has received numerous awards for excellence in research, teaching, leadership, and public engagement.

Richard O’Kennedy Professor Richard O’Kennedy

President of LIYSF (2005–2017)

Professor Richard O’Kennedy is Science Patron of LIYSF and Vice President for Research, Development and Innovation at Qatar Foundation, where he leads all research and innovation activity. He has previously held senior leadership roles at Hamad Bin Khalifa University and Dublin City University and was a visiting scientist at the MD Anderson Cancer Center. He holds seven patents and has published more than 250 scientific papers, alongside reviews and book chapters. He has supervised over 70 PhD students, delivered more than 180 invited lectures worldwide, and has a long record of successful industry collaboration. He has been a member of the Royal Irish Academy since 2014.
