Dr Paul McFarlane

Dr Paul McFarlane, Senior Teaching Fellow and Lecturer in Crime and Forensic Science at the UCL Department of Security and Crime Science.

Paul teaches and supervises research in policing, crime reduction, criminal investigation, international and domestic terrorism, organised crime, and human (HUMINT) intelligence collection at University College London’s Jill Dando Institute of Security and Crime Science and Centre for Global City Policing.

Paul’s research interests include undercover policing, surveillance, intelligence, and investigative failures. His research interests are focused on human intelligence failures and the impact of undercover operations to acklet crime and terrorism. Other research interests include the application of machine learning to operational policing and security issues, as well as the impact of strategic decision-making and human error in high-risk systems such as aviation security.

Paul has three decades of experience working with law enforcement, policing, and international intelligence agencies to develop cyber and real-world operational capability to detect and disrupt international terrorist organisations and organised crime groups.
